Back at it again

I'm at it again. Freelance writing. Not just as a sideline, but for real. Something that used to provide a stimulating and entertaining diversion from the at times monotonous nature of my traditional full time jobs is now my job - which is just the way I like it! Kind of a dream come true, really. I've always written. With the exception of a few temp agency mandates here and there, my jobs were always centred on writing, revising, translating - communicating. Now, my clients have access to all the forms of writing I have acquired from marketing writing to journalism to making techno-speak and palatable to a wide audience. I've taken the best of my last 10 years (professionally speaking) and begun a new venture. What's your latest project?

Social Media Consultant or Copywriter?

At one of my weekly networking meetings, it was strongly suggested that we needed a social media consultant for our Marketing Power Team and all eyes immediately turned towards me. After all, they reasoned, a social media consultant is really just a writer, right? Wrong. Yes, I am the copywriter for our chapter. But Social Media Consultant? I actually mulled it over for a few seconds: Images of Blogs and Tweets and Facebook pages began to dance in my head until our web designer pulled me out of my reverie.

In order to get the most out of social media channels a consultant needs to know a few things about your target market. First, are they online? If they're not, don't waste your time. If so, what sites do they visit? Where do they shop? What do they read? A social media consultant is a strategist. They determine the where, when and how of using social media tools to accomplish your marketing goals. If they happen to write well, it's a bonus. If they don't, they can develop the skeleton of your campaign but you'll still need a writer to put the meat on the bones.
